The British Museum is exhibiting magnificent scupltures from Africa’s Kingdom of Ife. The exhibition features 109 fantastic pieces of sculpture, mostly brought from museums in Nigeria.
From 12-15th centuries, Ife was a wealthy and cosmopolitan city in West Africa, in what is now Nigeria. The people of Ife had an amazingly rich culture with unique style of sculpture, using stone, brass, copper and terracotta. The beautiful human figures show a cross-section of Ife society, including rulers of all ages.
The Kingdom of Ife exhibition is a part of celebration of African art and culture at the British Museum. This year 17 African countries will celebrate their 50th anniversary of independence, so you can expect that there will be even more special talks and events.
